Outreach to Kyrgyzstan - April 14-24

This is a short note requesting your fervent prayer for us.

Tomorrow, I will be leading a group of 8 Ukrainians on an evangelistic trip to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. For 10 days we will be involved in concerts, dramas, street evangelism, student ministry, and other events. All of this is to help in the planting of a new church to be pastored by Paul and Melanie Billings.

Please pray for our safety in travel, effectiveness in sharing God's love, and our unity as a team. I also desire that you would pray for Renee and the kids, their health, and protection. Renee is slightly under the weather right now and I hesitate to leave.

Thank you so much for your partnership with us.

    By His Grace,
    Jed Gourley

P.S. Please continue to pray for the Lord's direction for us as we are planning to leave Kiev and begin a new work in another city.

Update from Jed & Renee Gourley
    March 18, 2006

I couldn’t pray. I could only sing. The night we announced to the church body that the Lord was moving us on was a much anticipated, yet difficult evening. Afterwards, I could not speak with people without tears welling up in my eyes.

The weekend before this prayer meeting was our married couples’ retreat. I almost did not want to go to the retreat because, knowing what we were soon to announce and yet not able to share it with my close friends, was a burden that I did not wish to carry. How can one be close in fellowship when not able to share that which is closest to the heart?

Sadness has been one of the predominant emotions that I have been feeling since that meeting. Looking back upon the nearly 14 years of ministry here in Kiev, and thinking about the future that awaits this church, it is hard to not see myself a part of it. Some of the people in the body were initially in my youth group or Bible classes that I had in public schools in the early 90’s. We have been an integral part of each other as we have journeyed together into adulthood and parenthood.

Now, almost two weeks have gone by since our announcement. How exciting to know that the Lord has led us in this decision, but what is the next step? Immediately before the announcement, I began thinking of Kyrgyzstan yet again, wondering if perhaps the Lord were directing us there. However, I do not yet feel released from Ukraine. There are still many cities here that need Bible teaching churches. We have invitations to go to several cities and begin works. What of these? Could it be our job to plant more churches and train up Ukrainians to go to Kyrgyzstan?

So, we wait. Waiting upon the Lord. We know that He is faithful and we “feed on His faithfulness.” (Ps. 37) He has led us this far. Nearly 14 years of ministry and He has always been faithful to direct us into His will. So, we wait.

Please pray for us as we wait upon Him. There are many areas of transition that are taking place at the moment.

~ Alosha Satenko: Alosha, pastor of the three year old church in Borodyanko, will be returning to the Kiev church and assuming the role of senior pastor. Alosha is a tested man with a beautiful family. He has proven to be a faithful and capable leader with a compassionate heart for those around him. We are meeting with Alosha frequently to help him in this time of transition. He has just recently given his final notice to the metro (subway system) and will be coming on staff at the church full-time as of March 27th.

~ A new pastor for Borodyanko: Alosha is not going to leave the church in Borodyanko without a pastor. Until that time, he will pastor both churches. Please pray if the Lord would have another Ukrainian from the Kiev church to go and pastor. May He direct all of our hearts in this decision.

~ Zhenya Kucherov: Zhenya has returned to the office and is excited about all that the Lord has in store for the church here in Kiev. He had left the office last fall to work “in his profession,” always preferring to have a regular job and not to be paid for ministry. However, as he saw that he did not have time to serve in the ways in which He felt the Lord directing him, he has returned with much joy and anticipation in what the Lord has for him. Please pray for me as I turn over many of my responsibilities to Zhenya, that the Lord would give me special wisdom to know how best to do it.

~ Kyrgyzstan: For almost the entire month of April, George and Pam will be heading to Kyrgyzstan in order to be with Melanie, Renee’s sister, as she is preparing to have a baby. I also will be leading a group of 12 Ukrainians to Kyrgyzstan in late April. Pray for us, that if the Lord is calling us to Kyrgyzstan that He will confirm it to us in many ways during these trips. Pray also that our times there in April will be fruitful for His kingdom.

~ Ukraine: Some of the cities in Ukraine to which we have been invited are Ternopil and Lutsk in the west, and Nikolayiv in the south. If the Lord’s plan is for us to remain in Ukraine, we soon hope to visit these and other cities in order to assess the need of new churches.

Also, please pray for the future of our “team.” It has been a blessing and a privilege to work together as family in the harvest fields of Ukraine. However, we also want to be sensitive to know if the Lord desires us to begin separate works or to remain together.

Your prayers and partnership with us are very important to us during this time of transition. Please contact us should you have any questions.

    By His Grace,
    Jed, Renee, Anna, Elizabeth, Joshua
